James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. KJV
Motives are simply the reason for doing or having something. The reason for having something is more important than the thing itself. If your motives are not right you will not receive what you are asking God for. Right motives are one of the rules of answered prayer. Get your motives right for that which you desire from the Lord.
Simon the sorcerer wanted the ability to pray for people to receive the Holy Spirit – but his motives were wrong and hence his methods of achieving that was also wrong. He nearly received curses from the mouth of Peter.
Acts 8:18-20 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. KJV
Why do you want to prosper financially? Why do you want the anointing? Why do you want a new car? Why do you want to get married? Why do you want to go into ministry? Take the time to answer these questions carefully with an open heart.
God did not intend to bless you so that you can become a chief in your village. You must seek to prosper because: it brings glory and pleasure to God; it is your right in Christ; so that you can advance the kingdom of God; enjoy serving God; deliver you from worry and anxiety and it’s related diseases and pains; impact your world – help other people in society.
God is a God who weighs the hearts of men; He tries the hearts of men. Jeremiah 17:10 says, I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
You must engage in heart check from time to time as a believer in Christ – not for the purpose of condemnation, but to keep you in alignment with the rhythm of heaven. Check your motives whether they are pure before the Lord. Man may not know your motives; but God knows them. Pray like David, search my heart O Lord. If you don’t do this kind of thing from time to time, you will veer off into tangent and not know it.
