1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.KJV
Being hungry for God is one thing. Maintaining that hunger for the long haul is a totally different thing altogether. There are people who once upon a time were hungry for God. But in the process of time, they have lost their desire for the things of God.
Your hunger for the things of the Spirit is proof of a healthy life in the spirit. Thus, you have to fight to maintain your fire and hunger.
Scripture tells us not to quench the Spirit. It means do not quench what the Holy Spirit is doing in your life. You have to devise a plan to maintain your fire in the Spirit. There are ways to keep your hunger on boiling point:
Firstly, learn to maintain a consistent devotional life. A consistent studying of the word and prayer will keep you on fire. The day your devotional life goes down, your fire goes down too.
Secondly, stay with folks who are hungry for God. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” One of the ways to stay on fire is to be around people who are on fire for the Lord. If you hang around unserious and cold believers, you will soon lose your fire and enthusiasm for the things of God, and wind up being like them.
Thirdly, read about people who are doing mighty things for God
Daniel 9:2 says, “In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.” Read books on people who have worked miracles and exhibited the supernatural dimensions of the Spirit.
Fourthly, avoid listening to fire killers. There are teachings and preachings that kill the fire of the believer. Avoid people who speak against prayer, miracles, fasting, the prophetic, faith and the supernatural. These kinds of preaching will only kill your fire and enthusiasm for Jesus. I have heard of cases of people who listened to a man of God and stopped praying – they were convinced that prayer wasn’t necessary – that it is just the word. That teaching is dangerous. And they ended up losing their fire and eventually their ministries.
