Genesis 49:3-4 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, The excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; Because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch. KJV
During the end of the days of Jacob, he called his sons together to tell them what shall befall them in the future. He blessed others while he cursed some. Reuben was his firstborn who had the right of the firstborn. Yet the father cursed him and gave the birthright blessings to other sons.
Reuben was told, even though you are the excellency of dignity, you will still not excel. What happened was that, Reuben had sex with his father’s wife, Bilhah (Genesis 35:22). Jacob took notice of that; and when it came to the time that mattered most, Reuben lost the double portion, the right of the firstborn.
Now, what do we learn from this unfortunate story? There are no insignificant details in scriptures. There are a lot of golden nuggets we can glean from this ancient story, written for our admonishing and learning.
Reuben means “see the son”. While “Bilhah” means timid or fearful. Instead of Reuben beholding the Son, Jesus Christ, he rather went and had intercourse with timidity and fear.
Scriptures tell us to look unto Jesus – this means looking away from every other thing and focusing on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). Your victory is in beholding the Son, Jesus; whiles your defeat is in beholding fear. The moment you take your eyes off Jesus and start looking at the world around you, you will become fearful and timid. What you behold determines what you become.
Never entertain thoughts of fear, doubt, guilt and condemnation. When Peter looked to Jesus, he walked on the water. But the moment he focused and had intercourse with fear, he started to sink in the presence of Jesus. While in the wilderness, Israel complained and murmured against God; and for that reason, God sent fiery serpents that bit them. The solution was to look on the bronze serpent on the pole, a picture of the cross.
The world we live in today is full of fearful events and news. If you focus on the increase of price of goods, inflations, wars and evils going on, you will be having intercourse with fear. And this will cause you to be unstable like Reuben, thereby losing your inheritance in Christ. Keep your eyes on Jesus and His finished work on the cross, for herein lies the victory of the saints. Hallelujah!
