Leviticus 15:5 And whosoever toucheth his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. KJV

If you are very acquainted with the book of Leviticus, you will notice a striking phrase that is repeated several times: “unclean until the even. “Even” here means “evening”. The idea here is that when a man is defiled in certain instances, he shall be unclean until evening.

The word evening is of great significance to a good Bible student. If you don’t meditate and think deeply on things like this, you will miss great juices of the word.

In scripture, there is what is called “the evening sacrifice”. It is one of the important sacrifices of the Jews which is offered in the evening. Elijah took advantage this time and call down fire on Mount Carmel: And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel,….. (1 Kings 18:36).

It was the same time that Daniel had a visitation from God: Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation (Daniel 9:21 KJV). A man who is unclean becomes clean at evening because that is the time the evening sacrifice is being offered.

It is interesting to know that Jesus also died at the time of the evening oblation, the same time the evening sacrifice was offered. Jesus' death on the cross fulfilled this evening sacrifice. And from then on, all those who believe in Jesus are made clean and holy for by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified (Hebrews 10:14 KJV).

Every man born into this world was unclean until the cross – the evening sacrifice. If you are born again, you are pure and holy because of the blood of Jesus Christ. You are as holy as God Himself. Of course this has nothing to do with who you are in the flesh – it is your new spiritual identity, which if a man will continually contemplate on it, it will eventually show forth on the outside in a Christ-like living.
