THE REASON FOR OUR STIRRING

2Timothy 1:6 ¶ Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Everybody needs a stirring. Paul instructed Timothy to stir up the gift of God in him. Bishop David Oyedepo said, “Every gift of God multiplies with use”. The more you use a gift the more it multiplies or becomes sharper and effective. For example, if you have the gift of prophecy and you don’t use it, with time, it becomes dormant and ineffective. If you have the gift of teaching, use it; begin from where you are and start teaching; with time it will develop and you will have so much depth and teaching will become second to nature. Having operated in the teaching anointing over the years, I don’t struggle to teach; it just flows. What I have always lack is the time to express what God has put in my heart for there is a ceaseless fountain within from which the nations are drinking from it.
If you have the gift of tongues, you can stir it up by spending time praying more in tongues. The more you pray in tongues, the more your tongues develop. There are those who have received the gift of tongues and are still at the babyhood stage speaking the same tongue for years. God will not stir up the gift for you; you have to stir it up. To stir up means to fan into flame. It is likened to fire that is going out and you start fanning it into flame to rekindle again. This is the expression Paul was communicating to his protégée, Timothy.
But if you take a critical look at verse 7 it begins with ‘for’. ‘For’ has to do with ‘because’ or ‘reason’. Thus the verse 7 explains the verse 6. The reason he is telling us to stir up the gift of God in us is because God has not given us the spirit of fear but power, love and sound mind. I believe Timothy was kind of timid to use the gift he has; or probably he has not been using the gift he has received through Paul’s ministry; and Paul was letting him know that the reason he has to stir up the gift of God in him is because we have not receive the spirit of fear or bondage. In other versions the word fear is translated timidity.
Timidity hinders us from releasing our gifting; it is a barrier to the release of the anointing. Some of you have received genuine gifts from God; but for some reason you are afraid to use it to the glory of God. For most people it is the fear of men or probably inferiority complex. God wants you to stir these gifts inside you because He has given you the spirit of power, love and sound mind. You are not weak; you have power; God loves you and that’s more important than the acceptance of men; you have sound mind to be able to make the right judgments. Wake up and stir up the gift of God inside you. This is one thing no one can do for you – you have to do it yourself. Wake up today and stir up the gift of God in you that have lied dormant for years for the blessing of the body of Christ. It cost God His beloved Son to give you the gift; the only way to appreciate Him is by using it to His glory.
