1Timothy 5:17 ¶ Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
This scripture is so powerful. The verse 18 begins with ‘for’. ‘For’ has to do with ‘because’ or ‘reason’. Even though the scripture has to do with giving to ministers of the gospel as a reward of their labor in the word, it can also be applied in diverse ways. Paul is giving the reason for saying elders who rule well and labor in the word should be honored by quoting the scripture in the Old Testament to support his argument.
In essence, the reason elders should be honored is because the scripture saith so. The revelation here is that whatever we do must have the backing of the scriptures. It implies that we “do” because the scripture “saith so”. We give tithe because the scripture saith so; we sow seeds of faith because the scripture saith so; we go to church because the scripture saith so; we fast and pray because the scripture saith so.
The scriptures become the reason for our doing. Every action of us must be based on scriptures. We honor our parents not because we feel like it is good to do it but because the scripture saith so; we honor leaders because the scripture say so; we declare we are healed because the scripture saith so; we believe Jesus is the only way because the scripture saith so. Whatever that does not have scriptural backing should not be pursued. The scripture is the end of all arguments. Glory to God!
