Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
God’s word gives us the direction in which we are supposed to look at – Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Our Christian walk is likened to that of a race – whether you know it or not we are all in a race. There is a way we are supposed to run. We are supposed to lay aside every weight and the sin that easily beset us i.e. lay aside anything that will impede your race. No athlete runs with baggage and weights – they run with very light clothes on.
Also, they run with a vision and a goal – to finish the race. Jesus also ran His race when He was here on earth. Going to the cross was His race – it was His goal to die on the cross and redeemed the whole human race. A joy (multitudes coming into the kingdom) was set before Him; because of this joy He endured all the shame and reproach. God wants us to run in-like manner. We must have a definite goal and vision before us. And as we run we should have one thing in mind – reaching our goal. You have to despise all the shame; fight all the setbacks that will try to stop you from reaching your destination; you have to drop habits that are like weights that will draw you back. Run with purpose; run with your goal in mind.
Vision and goals give one discipline. Because the athlete knows what he is running for, there are certain foods he will not even eat – all because he has a goal in front of him. God’s word instructs us to look unto Jesus; look at the way He did run His race and run likewise. Heaven is cheering you on; all the cloud of witnesses (saints that have died in Christ) are all cheering you on. Winning is your inheritance. Run with patience and endurance. Don’t give up because you faced a setback.
If an athlete is running and falls, he does not stay there. Rather he gets up and dusts himself and continues the race. If you fall while running, dust yourself, learn your lessons and move on with your life. Don’t let one fall stop you from running. Keep on running; don’t give up till you get to your goal. Keep your eyes on the finish line. If you endure the setbacks and despise the shame, you will also sit down on a high position just like Jesus. Hallelujah!
