Job 15:14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
How can mortal man be righteous before a righteous and a holy God? This was one question the Old Testament saints struggled with; they couldn’t find the answer to it in as much as they wanted to; it eluded them. In their minds, this is not possible. And they were right in the sense that, man of himself by his deeds and works cannot stand righteous before a holy and righteous God.
Man at his best is filthy before God. Scripture says that, “Our righteousness is as a filthy rag before God.” The term “filthy rag” implies a menstrous cloth; and that stuff is very dirty and stinks. This is who man is before God. You cannot trust in your good works. God is so holy; according to the book of revelation He is thrice holy. There is nothing on earth that can come before God. The whole world is corrupted and fallen, including man. Look at what the psalmist said:
Psalms 130:3 If thou, Lord , shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
Thus in order for this mortal and sinful man to be righteous before God, it has to be based on the work of a perfect man. The question the Old Testament saints couldn’t answer, Jesus came and answered it. Jesus is our only hope of salvation. Without Jesus we would all be lost forever without any hope of salvation and redemption. Thank God for Jesus! Jesus’ perfect work of redemption has brought us an everlasting righteousness that cannot be lost.
Today, we can stand in the presence of God without any sense of guilt and condemnation. God sees us righteous in Christ. Our righteousness is not of us but of Jesus. He is now our righteousness. This is one reason why when I hear some believers and even preachers say things like, if the believer sins and does not repent or confess it, he will go to hell, I shudder tremendously. Is it Jesus plus our works that brings us salvation? True salvation is Jesus plus nothing. Jesus plus anything equals zero. We are saved by grace through faith. That’s all it takes.
No matter how sinful you may look like, if you will believe in Jesus and accept Him as your Lord, God will declare you forever righteous. Jesus alone is your salvation and redemption. Hallelujah!
