2 Samuel 9:1 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?

God is a God of covenant. He is a covenant keeping God. Over the centuries, God has kept His covenants that He swore to different men of different dispensations. Not one time has God ever failed to keep His covenant, for His covenant will He not break nor alter the things that be gone out of His lips (Psalm 89:34).

When David conquered Jerusalem, he swore that no lame person will ever enter the palace. And you know, where the king’s word is there is power. No one was supposed to violate that decree; violation of it could mean death to the offender. But Mephibosheth entered the king’s palace; and not only that, he ate continually with the king all the days of his life. Now what happened? Did king David go soft? No! The answer is the covenant.

Prior to this time, David had made a covenant with Jonathan and both of them had pledged to do good to each other's descendants. Now David had the opportunity to make good his promise. As at this time the only surviving member of Saul’s family was Mephibosheth. But he was lame in both feet. However, David overlooked the lameness and said to him, you will eat continually at my table. What enabled David to overlook his decree was the covenant.

Mephibosheth had access to king David’s palace not because he was good. In fact, due to his lameness, he was already disqualified. He did not stand a chance by himself. But the covenant opened the door for him and brought him into fellowship with royalty. Today, the blood of Jesus has qualified you for every blessing of God. God does not bless us because we are good; it is simply because of the covenant of grace He cut with Jesus on the cross.

The new covenant has more power than anything. God has not gone soft on sin. The only reason we don’t get the punishment we deserve is because of the covenant. For Jesus’ sake, God will never punish us anymore for our wrong doing. This is what religion cannot accept. Good works is great; live right; it will do you a lot of good. But good works does not grant you acceptance before God. We are blessed because of the covenant.

Where is your faith? On the covenant or in your works? Let your faith rest completely on what Jesus did and you will enjoy all of God’s blessing.
