Judges 6:36-37 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
It is rather unfortunate that even in this New Testament times, people still put out fleeces before the Lord. What do I mean by putting out fleeces before the Lord? Putting out fleeces means using physical scenarios as proof or confirmation of God’s leading. And this is very dangerous as it is not God’s way of leading us, for we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
For example, a young man has seen a lady he wants to marry. Then he says to God, Lord, if it is your will, if I visit this lady to day, let her prepare rice and stew for me. Now this man visits this lady in question and the lady prepares rice and stew for him. This guy takes this as God’s leading; this is what is called “fleece”; and it is not God’s way of leading you – this is fleshly and not of the Spirit.
You do not have to do what Gideon did. Gideon was an old testament man. And God permitted him because of His mercy. Gideon was a man who couldn’t take God at His word. Even when God told him He has delivered Midian into his hand, for God to further convince him, He asked him to go into the camp of the Midianites to hear a man giving a dream and an interpretation.
I heard of a lady who wanted God’s leading to marry a young man who has been pressing her for marriage. He told God that, as I step out today and I see a shooting star in the sky then the man is my husband. Well, she really saw a shooting star when she stepped out. She married this guy but the marriage also went like the shooting star – they got divorced in no time.
Today in the New Testament, God doesn’t lead us by fleece. He leads us by His word and Spirit that indwells us. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” God leads us from within and not from without. Stop putting out fleeces. Study more of the word of God; and spend more time praying in the Holy Ghost. The more time you spend with God, the more you get to know Him and His ways. And when God speaks to you in your spirit, learn to take God at His word by faith and you will find peace and rest for your soul.
