Proverbs 9:10‭-‬11 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. KJV

To fear God means to have utmost reverence and respect for God and His things. It is having respect for God's word and trembling at His word. When God speaks to you, you do not take His word lightly. To fear God does not mean to be afraid of God.

The fear of God is the chiefest and zenith of wisdom. It is the mother of all the many sided wisdom of God; this is what it means that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The word “beginning” in the Hebrew means chiefest, principal etc. This implies that the fear of God is the highest dimension of wisdom.

Unfortunately, this chiefest of wisdom is the least taught and pursued in the church. This is the wisdom king Solomon missed and fell badly. Solomon had the left handed wisdom of God for wealth and riches and honour. But he ignored the right handed wisdom of God which is the fear of God, and sinned against God greatly. The man who loved the Lord and built the most magnificent temple of all time, built temples for devils.

It will be injustice to scriptures if we teach wisdom and not teach the fear of God which is the chiefest of wisdom. One time Abraham said, there is no fear of God in this place hence the people are prone to do evil (Genesis 20:11). When the fear of God is absent from a man's life evil is inevitable.

The benefits of the fear of God is enormous. It keeps you from sinning against God. It will lengthen your days on earth. Proverbs 3:13‭, ‬16 says, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.”

The fear of God will keep you from all the pains and hurts of life caused by foolish mistakes and decisions. It helps a man to depart from evil. Sometimes you see how some folks foolishly get into certain kinds of evil: Samson lacked God's fear and chased every woman he saw. A great man of God committing adultery with girls and thereby losing their ministry; this is crazy. You can really do silly things if the fear of God is not working in you.

The fear of God will keep your head sane while you enjoy the blessings of God. It will keep you within the boundaries of God like Joseph. It will help you to stand and speak against evil. It brings riches and honour. Proverbs 22:4 says, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.” May the Spirit of the fear of the Lord come upon you strong in the name of Jesus.
