2 Chronicles 18:31 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.
Our theme scripture is the story about king Jehoshaphat and king Ahab. Jehoshaphat was the son of Asa, all descendants of David. He was the king of Judah as at this time while Ahab was the king of Israel. Jehoshaphat had an affinity with Ahab, whom we all know was a wicked king who has been destined for destruction.
Ahab asked Jehoshaphat to go to battle with him against Syria to repossess Ramoth-Gilead which rightfully belonged to Israel. Ahab told Jehoshaphat that he will disguise himself while he should be in his kingly robe. While in battle, the men of Syria nearly killed Jehoshaphat thinking he was the king of Israel. Remember the battle was not about Jehoshaphat but Ahab, he only went to help Ahab; but he nearly got killed.
I have always wondered how a good man like king Jehoshaphat will have anything to do with a wicked king like Ahab. Even though Jehoshaphat was a good king, because of his affiliation with Ahab, he nearly got himself killed in a battle that did not concern him.
Even though you are a believer in Christ, if you company with the wrong bunch, you will be in trouble. You cannot company with evil and wicked people as a Christian. Unfortunately, some believers’ close friends are unbelievers. Some even go ahead to marry unbelievers or people of a different faith.
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be fooled. “Bad companions ruin good character.” GNB
Some folks will tell you, when we get married I will change him. You are not smarter than God who said do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14). Sooner or later, they will rather turn you back into the world. Don’t play with the things of this world; you will get burnt. The people you company with matters a lot. They either make or break you.
I am not saying you should hate unbelievers. As long as you are in this world, you will definitely deal with unbelievers. But what I am saying is that, they cannot be your friends, people you share deep things with and take counsel from.
What counsel will an ungodly person without the Spirit give to you? Some people got cold in the things of God because they companied with unsaved people. In this year, one of the things you should do is to choose your friends wisely; discard the wrong friends from your life. Anyone who is not inspiring you to serve God, pushing you to grow in the things of God, challenging you in your walk of faith, it is time to lay them off.
