Romans 3:21-22 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: KJV
The doctrine of righteousness in scripture is one of the basic but profound revelations which unfortunately, many are yet to comprehend it. According to the Bible, this is the doctrine that differentiate the matured believer from the immature one (see Hebrews 5:14).
Basically, in scripture we have two kinds of righteousness: the righteousness which is according to the law and the righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ. The former is based on the observance of the law, while the latter is simply based on the expression of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Under the law men were justified by how good they have obeyed the law. But it is clear in scripture that the law was never given to make men righteous; it was given to bring all men to the end of themselves for by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified (made righteous) – Galatians 2:16. The Ten Commandments could not make men righteous – stand before God without a sense of guilt or inferiority complex, bold and confident in the presence of God. The law condemned all men.
Then God brought in a better covenant that can make men righteous on the account of the work of another. And by the death and resurrection of Jesus, God made it possible for all men to be justified from all things. Acts 13:38-39 says, “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
Today in Christ Jesus, God is giving righteousness or right standing to men as a free gift. And those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17). All one need to do is to believe and confess the Lordship of Jesus by faith, then he is made righteous, declared not guilty and discharged from all accusations; and you can now stand in the presence of God without any sense of condemnation. Hallelujah!
