AUTHORITY TO EXCERCISE POWER

Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
There is a difference between “power” and “authority”. Unfortunately, in the King James Version of the Bible, the word “authority” is often translated “power”. Thus if you don’t study it in the Greek rendering you will not get the right interpretation of scriptures.
For instance, Matthew 28:18 says, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (KJV). The word “power” here is from the Greek word “exousia” which means “authority” or “delegated power”.
Acts 1:8 says, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The word “power” in this scripture is from the Greek word “dunamis” which means dynamic power or inherent power or ability.
But you realise that in both of the two previous scriptures we have looked at, both “exousia” and “dunamis” were translated as power. So, if you don’t study it in the Greek you will miss the truth of God’s word. Authority is the right or privilege to act; while power is ability to effect changes – it is miracle power. This is power responsible for the miraculous. Our opening scripture is one of those scriptures where both “power” and “authority” were used together.
Jesus gave us authority so that we can exercise power. Without authority we cannot exercise power. The day you became born again you were invested with divine authority. But the day you received the Holy Ghost you were infused with dynamic power from on high to work miracles.
If you are born again and you haven’t received the Holy Ghost with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues, do well to ask the Lord to give you His Spirit to enable you to exercise your authority over sickness, evil, the devil and all the circumstances of life.
