John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Learning about Jesus brings so much joy and fulfillment. His name is wonderful as a sweet ointment. There is a vast difference between “the only begotten” and “the first begotten”. When Jesus was born into this world through Mary by the agency of the Holy Spirit, He became the “only begotten”.
Prior to the birth of Christ, God had never had a son hence Jesus was the only begotten when He was born. This is what John spoke about in our opening scripture.
Now, the question is, when did Jesus become “the first begotten” of the Father? Jesus became the first begotten from the dead when He rose from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus was a new birth as prophesied by the psalmist:
Psalms 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Colossians 1:18 says, …… who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;….. Now why first begotten from the dead? Jesus’ resurrection from the dead was the first time someone came out from spiritual death. All men born into this world were born into spiritual death hence need to be reborn by receiving the new life through Christ.
Jesus’ resurrection from the dead fulfilled the Firstfruit Offering principle. Which implies that, those who die in Christ are not lost forever. They will one day rise from the dead with a new body because ……Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept (1 Corinthians 15:20). Jesus is now the first begotten from the dead. Hallelujah!
