1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
When you preach pure grace, some folks reaction is, don’t you think this preaching will make people sin the more? This kind of reaction lets me know that I am preaching pure grace. To some of these people, you need to tell people that if they don’t live right they will burn in hell.
I do counsel people to live right. In fact, my standard of right living is probably higher than some of these folks who preach hard against sin. But I don’t live right to be accepted by God – I am already accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6). Neither do I live right because I am afraid that if I don’t live right, God will burn me in hell; I am perfected in love. I know that God’s wrath will never fall on me because it fell on Jesus at the cross.
Living right is an appreciation of the cross of Christ. I live right because God wants me to live right. Secondly, it is to my benefit if I live right. Thirdly, it will keep satan at bay. Fourthly, it will deliver me from the pains and hurts people go through for living the wrong lifestyle.
When God tells you to live right, it is because He loves you dearly and knows that sin will only destroy you if you engage in it. So, you see, the motivation has changed in the New Testament. We live right because we love the Lord and appreciate the work of the cross that has already delivered us from sin.
If you are still afraid that if you don’t live right God will throw you in hell, according to scripture, you have not been perfected (matured) in God’s love – you are walking in fear. And scripture says, this fear has torment. Which implies you are in torment; your soul is in trouble.
Free yourself from this prison as you see God’s love lavishly poured upon you because of the cross of Christ. The more of God’s love you see, the more you will love the Lord. And it is the love of God that constrains (restrains) you from evil.
