KEEP THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST AS THE MAIN THING

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

When your priorities are wrong in your life, everything falls apart. One key to success in life is keeping the main thing. When we major in the minor, and minor in the major, there will be chaos in our lives.

What the church has done over the years is to minor in the major thing. Our opening scripture says, the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes. “The” is a definite article. It implies that the gospel of Jesus is the only power to save, heal and deliver men.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the main thing  and in order for the church to be relevant, we have to keep the gospel as the main thing that we preach. When you major in preaching hard against sin and preaching condemnation, you are not preaching the main thing.

Carefully study the epistles of Paul like Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, and the others, and you will find out that he begins each book with the revelation of Jesus, the grace of God and the gospel then in later chapters, mostly the last chapters, he talks about instructions of the word. If you don’t have the gospel foundation, instruction won’t do you much good. You stand on the gospel foundation to follow the instructions of the word.

The reason the early church had great results was that they majored in the gospel. Look at what Peter preached to the house of Cornelius: To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins (Acts 10:43). And what was the result of this preaching? Acts 10:44  says, “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.”

The main theme of the scriptures is God’s unconditional love and grace. This is what we should major in. Of course, we are supposed to tell Christians to live right. But we are not to major in that. Remember if you keep the main thing the main thing, every other thing will fall in place. Thus, if we keep the gospel of grace as the main thing, we will make tremendous impact in our world.
