DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS

DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

It is just good to study the scripture again and again. The more you do, the more you get new levels of insights and revelations. One morning as I read this scripture, God began to quicken stuff in my spirit. In our theme scripture we were told that Jesus Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree. That's wonderful. But the question is, why did He do it? The answer is right there in the same scripture: that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Firstly, His death caused us to die to sin. Today, we are not supposed to die to sin again. I know there are those who are struggling with sin. And they claim that we are supposed to die to sin. Absolutely no. Here, God is not giving us an instruction to die to sin. The Holy Ghost is telling us what has happened on the cross for us; that we are dead (past tense) to sin.

One liberating truth about the cross is that, Jesus died once to sin for all time. And on the cross, Jesus became our substitute; that means, whatever He did He did it for us. When He died to sin once and for all time, we also died to sin once and for all time. The new creation cannot respond to sin. That's why the Apostle John said, he cannot sin for he is born of God (1 Jn 3:9). In Romans we were only told to reckon ourselves dead to sin.

Romans 6:10-11 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Here, God is not telling us to die to sin but rather we should have that mental attitude that we are dead to sin. And the more you believe this truth, irrespective of what your experience is, the more power will be released for you to overcome any acts of sin.

Again from our theme scripture, the Holy Ghost reveals something beautiful to us: that we might live unto righteousness. Religious folks go into tangent with this scripture. We are never instructed here to live righteously or to stop sinning. A thousand times no. There is something big here I want you to see.

What the Holy Spirit is saying is that if we are dead to sin, then we are alive unto righteousness. So it is either you are alive unto sin and dead to righteousness or dead to sin and alive unto righteousness. This is the concept you find as you study the book of Romans 5 and 6. Hallelujah!

This awesome truth will make you shout. As new creations in Christ Jesus, we are completely dead unto sin once and for all time. And we are forever hopelessly, helplessly and irreversibly alive unto righteousness, never to be separated from God. Righteousness is now our nature. We do not have to struggle to do what is right. It is now our life. Praise God!
