THE DIVINE STRANGER

THE DIVINE STRANGER

Pastor Victor

Luke 10:34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

I just love this title. The story of the good Samaritan and the man who fell among thieves in scripture is just an amazing story. For most people all they see is just doing good to their neighbour. But the story has much deeper meaning than what most people know to be truth concerning this ancient story.

Now, the story is not a parable. Jesus said, there was a certain man. So certainly, this was something that really happened. We were told that a man travelled from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves. Geographically, Jerusalem is higher than Jericho. So going from Jerusalem to Jericho means going down. Remember Jerusalem is the city of God hence the city of blessing; while Jericho was a city of the curse; Joshua cursed Jericho when he overthrew it.

To go from Jerusalem to Jericho means to go from blessing to curse. Once upon a time when God created man, man was in a state of blessing and prosperity. Then man sinned and went down to the city of the curse, wounded and half dead. All unbelievers are half dead even though many of them don’t know. Their spirit is completely cut off from God hence they cannot receive the things that be of God.

Then comes the Samaritan who got down from his donkey; this is very vital. Jesus did not sit in heaven to save us; but He came down to us to save us. The Samaritan then cleaned the wounds, poured oil and bandaged this broken and half dead man, and brought him to an inn to be taken care of.

The Samaritan is a picture of Jesus, and the man who fell among the thieves is a picture of lost man. When man fell, man became wounded and half dead. And when Jesus the divine stranger came, He cleansed us from our sins with His blood (wine), and poured oil (the Holy Ghost) upon us. The inn is a picture of the local church. Then He brought us into the church to be taken care of till He comes back. The Pastor is the inn keeper, given the responsibility to take care of God’s people. The Samaritan gave the inn keeper two denari to take care of the wounded man.

Jesus has given us all the provision we will require as ministers of God to take care of His people including wisdom, grace and money. Jesus is that “Divine Stranger” and He came to save, heal and deliver us. Praise God!
