Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
Several years ago, I visited a friend. The moment the father saw me, he did not even allow me to even sit down; then he asked, how did you get to know my son? I was taken aback. Then I said, we met at a quiz competition. Then he said, you are welcome. I have never forgotten that experience. The man was being careful of who was a with his son and influencing him – he was protecting his investment. As we speak, that friend is now a medical doctor.
Look at the opening scripture in the Amplified translation: Do not even associate with a man given to angry outbursts; Or go [along] with a hot-tempered man, Or you will learn his [undisciplined] ways And get yourself trapped [in a situation from which it is hard to escape]. PROVERBS 22:24-25 AMP
1 Corinthians 15:33 says, Don't fool yourselves. Bad friends will destroy you (CEV). The power of friendship and association cannot be overemphasised. How far you go in life can be largely determined by the friends you keep. You cannot joke with this thing. You will always end up learning the ways of your friends. So, take your time and choose friends you want to follow their example.
Very often your friends are a reflection of yourself. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Some people started drinking alcohol and doing hooliganism when they joined certain friends. Others became drug addicts because of the company they kept. Some folks were lured into armed robbery by their friends.
You cannot choose your brothers and sisters of your family; neither can you choose your parents. But you sure can choose who become your friend. Right now begin to scan through all the people you call your friends and ask yourself, what are the contributions of these people in my life? Take a pen and a paper and make that list. Anyone who you know is not contributing any thing to your life and he is not inspiring you to greatness, it is time to say good bye – take action now.
Looking at all the scriptures that I have given you in this epistle, do you need a prophet to tell you to carefully choose your friends? Good friends can take you far. So, make good friends and keep them.
