Phillipians 3:9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.
When Elijah contested with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, he asked them to put a sacrifice on the altar – only a sacrifice. The prophets of baal called on baal till noon and there was no response. Elijah ridiculed them; and they started leaping on the altar and cutting themselves with knives and bled. This they did to invoke the power of baal to bring fire on the sacrifice.
This is a picture of self-righteousness – they were saying in essence, the sacrifice is not enough for the fire to fall; let us add our efforts and it resulted in frustration. Think about this: what if the fire had fallen while they were leaping on the altar? They would have been burnt to ashes.
Elijah on the other hand put only the sacrifice on the altar; and called upon the God of Israel and the fire of God fell on the sacrifice. Elijah believed that the sacrifice was enough; and it is all that it will take for the fire to fall. Those who trust in their self-righteousness are leaping on the altar; and they have to stop. The sacrifice of Jesus is enough – we don’t need the law – God does not require man’s effort to please Him. The fire of God will only fall on where the sacrifice of Jesus is revealed.
Acts 10:43-44 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
The preaching that will receive God’s divine attestation is the one which unveils the sacrifice of Jesus and what it has accomplished for the believer. Trust and believe in the sacrifice of Jesus; it is enough for your salvation and righteousness; and you will see the power of God revealed in your life.
