THE REASON WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BE COVETOUS
THE REASON WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BE COVETOUS

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
I love the New Testament; it gives us a better motivation for doing the right things. It is not based on fear like the Old Testament. It is based on love and faith. Covetousness is lusting after someone else’s property. Covetousness will lead you to your grave so quickly. It took Achan and his family to the grave; it made Ahab kill Naboth. God is instructing us not to be covetous. The reason is that He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake”.
In the Greek it is a double negative – it implies “no never” – I will not leave you for any reason. God has promised to be with us in all circumstances. He is there to make provision for us. For this reason, God is telling you not to be covetous. Wow! He gives us a better reason not to lust after someone else property; it is because He has promised to be with you and provide for you. This is a higher reason than fear.
In the Old Testament If you lust after your neighbor’s property, you are to suffer the punishment for it. Hence their reason for not coveting was because of fear of punishment but not a confidence in the provision of God. God is showing us a more excellent way here in the New Testament. Put your trust in God’s provision and abundance. Don’t cut corners; don’t manipulate figures for your advantage; and don’t take what does not belong to you. God is more than able to provide for you. He fed over 3 million people in the wilderness where there were no grocery stores and malls. He supernaturally took care of them. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. He has not changed. Trust Him for your supply.
