WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

This is probably one question a lot of God’s people have not been able to clearly answer. I have heard of men of God who have been in ministry for over 30 years with lots of influence in the body of Christ, and are just finding out what the gospel is. This tells you that the majority of the body of Christ don’t know what the gospel is. Before Jesus ascended to heaven He commanded us to preach one message, the gospel.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

This is the message every creature needs to hear. Why? It is simply because it is the power of God unto salvation. It is the power of God to save your health, finances, marriage, and career. Interestingly, the gospel is not hard to define. The word “gospel” simply means good news. And news is something that has happened already.

The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ. It is all about what Jesus came to do in His redemptive program, which includes His suffering, death and resurrection. Another term that is synonymous to the gospel is “grace”. The Apostle Paul uses the word grace interchangeably with the word “gospel”.

Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Hence we can say that grace is the true gospel. The gospel of Jesus is called the “gospel of grace”. Acts 20:24 says, “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God”. In essence if you don’t understand grace, you have not known the gospel in truth. And if you have not known the gospel of Jesus, then you are sunk.

The New Testament is a grace covenant. It is a covenant where God’s unmerited favor is given to sinful and undeserving men. It is God’s righteousness to sinners at the expense of Christ. It is the message that declares, for I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more (Hebrews 8:13).

It is the message that declares, no condemnation even if you sin, because, Christ has been made the propitiation (mercy seat) for our sins. This is the gospel. And it is the power of God unto salvation.

If this is not what you are preaching or believe, then I am sorry to tell you, you don’t know the gospel. You have to embark on a diligent search to understand the gospel of grace. It is the true liberating message that frees men from guilt and condemnation, and breaks satanic bondages and shackles. The gospel of grace is the power of God unto salvation. Praise God!
