THE POWER OF REMEMBRANCE

Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Our opening scripture is not a promise of prosperity to God’s people. I know we use this scripture a lot when we teach on financial prosperity. But the truth is that it is not a promise. Rather it is a warning to God’s people not to forget God in their prosperity.

It was Moses the man of God who spoke the scripture above to Israel; and it was the time when Israel was just about to enter into the promise land. Moses was warning them not to forget God in their prosperity. He warned thus: Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: (Deuteronomy 8:11).

Most people remember God in their poverty and hard times. But few remember God when everything is alright with them. Your prosperity is not by your strength. I have read a couple of so called success books. And one of the things that gets on my nerves is this phrase, “Self Made Millionaire”. This is absolute nonsense. Many of these so-called successful people we read about them dare to say that they are “self made millionaires”. I tell you, they are delusional.

There is no man who is self made in anything. You were taught by someone how to write and read. You read someone’s book and learnt a thing or two that helped you to get to where you got to. Every man who has ever been successful in life was helped by someone. And all of these help is from the Lord Jesus. Jesus said, without me you can do nothing (John 15:5).

As you prosper in life, learn to be humble. Some folks with their few money want the whole world to bow to them. Child of God, always see God in all your success. Never take God out of the equation of your life. Your life takes the downward spiral when God is taken out of the equation of your life.

But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day (Deuteronomy 8:18). The power to get wealth is from God. Remember where God picked you from. Remember how far God has brought you. Remember your pastor who prayed for you and you got your breakthrough. Remember!
