Matthew 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? KJV
What Jesus meant in the statement above is not what many have thought or think. Many have referred to this statement as the size of faith which is not accurate. In this context, Jesus wasn’t referring to the size of faith. To understand this very well you will have to look at the Greek rendering.
The term “O ye of little faith" appears 5 times in the scriptures, and appears only in the gospels, 4 times in the book of Mathew and once in the book of Luke. And in the Greek, the term “O Ye of Little Faith” is from one Greek word, “Oligopistos” which means lacking confidence – this refers to unbelief. Thus, “O ye of little faith” is more of the nature of faith than its size.
In our opening scripture, the moment Jesus said, O Ye of little faith, He followed it with, why did you doubt? This tells you that the term “O ye of little of faith” means unbelief and lacking confidence – it is the opposite of faith. It was like Jesus was saying to Peter, you were in faith, why did you oppose your faith?
You have to take your time to study the Bible for yourself rather than just believe what someone has said. There is another place that Jesus spoke about the size of faith. And in this instance, Jesus said, even if your faith is little it can move mountains.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. KJV
This scripture kills the erroneous interpretation that “O Ye of little faith” means small faith. It tells you that even if your faith is small, you can move mountains. Any size of faith can produce powerful results. Thus, “O Ye of little faith” means opposite of faith or unbelief or lack of confidence. Glory to God!
