Matthew 25:2-4 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
One of the exciting things about wisdom that I love is that wisdom gives you foresight. In the Greek this kind of foresight or foreknowledge is called “proginosko”. It means seeing things before they ever come to pass. The implication of this is that foresight gives you an advantage to prepare for the unseen future.
Our opening scripture is a story about the ten virgins who went out to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise while five were foolish. The wise took extra oil for their lamps while the foolish did not take an extra oil for their lamps. The wise virgins by their wisdom foresaw that the bridegroom could be long in coming thus they prepared an extra oil for such a moment.
At midnight the bridegroom came; the wise virgins trimmed their lamps and poured their extra oil into it, while the foolish virgins lamps went off as a result of insufficient oil. By the time they went to buy oil and came back, the door has been shut and their opportunity to meet the bridegroom was gone.
The fact that these folks were all virgins means that they were all born again. But the difference between the wise and the foolish virgins was wisdom. As a child of God, it’s not enough to just be born again. You need some level of wisdom to succeed in this life. You need some foresight to prepare against the future. How prepared are you against the future? Or are you just living without any form of preparation for the future?
Proverbs 22:3 says, “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple passes on, and are punished.” The prudent man here is the wise man. And he has foresight and sees the evil before it comes and hides himself. But the simple, one who lacks wisdom, passes on and he is destroyed. The reason many genuine born-again believers get destroyed in life is that they don’t have foresight.
How prepared are you for the next 10 years of your life? Life is not going to be the same by10 years’ time. Neither is life going to be softer in the next 10 years. You will have to prepare for the future ahead of you so that you can escape the harshness of life. I tell young people to prepare for their future now. Don’t ever make the mistake that you have a lot of time; you don’t. Learn every skill you will need to succeed now; get that education now. Build up yourself spiritually now so that you can stand and face the future with great confidence.
