1 Samuel 9:6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.

This was a time when Saul’s father’s donkeys were missing and Saul and his servant went out to look for them. After much search but to no avail, Saul told the servant that they should return home. Interestingly, in that city, Zuph, where they got to was Samuel the Seer. The servant instructed Saul that they go see him peradventure he can show them the way.

If you take a careful look at the description the servant gave concerning Samuel you will see something beautiful about Jesus. He said “he is an honourable man (Life), everything he says comes to pass (Truth) and he will show us the way (Way). You see a picture of Jesus being the Way, Truth and the Life. Hence, in this context, Samuel is a type of Christ and Saul’s slave a type of the Law pointing Saul to Samuel.

The primary purpose of the Law is to bring us to Christ. It was not given to be obeyed, because God knew no one could keep the Law. All the rituals, ceremonies, feasts and sacrifices pointed to one person, Jesus. We ought to see Jesus in the Law.

For instance, there is an offering in the Law called the “trespass offering”. In this offering the guilty one brings a lamb without blemish and defect to the priest for atonement – a picture of the sinless nature of Christ. He lays his hands on the lamb and confesses his sins and kills it. Thus, the innocence of the lamb is transferred to him while his guilt is transferred to the lamb – an exchange has taken place. The offeror leaves with something he never had (righteousness). Jesus became our sin offering on the cross that we might be made the righteousness of God.

Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

The word translated schoolmaster is a Greek word, “paidagogos” which means a slave. In ancient times, this slave was supposed to take the children (between the ages of six and sixteen) of his master to and from school – he was neither the schoolmaster nor the instructor. His primary duty was to watch over the kids that they behave well. This slave was not supposed to teach the children but to lead them to their instructors to be taught. This is what God designed the Law to accomplish – to bring us to Christ, our true schoolmaster to be taught grace lessons. I feel sorry for those who are trying to live by the Law – they have fallen from grace. Let the Law lead you to Christ.
