1 Corinthians 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. KJV
For many, prayer is just a means to receive answers from God. This is just one of the many benefits of prayer. I believe the real essence of prayer is the building dimension – prayer builds the one who prays. Prayer is God’s building program.
God wants to build you up spiritually. Your life can be built up like an edifice. How high and strong that edifice becomes is dependent on how you commit yourself to a life of prayer.
The word edify from our opening scripture is from the Greek “oikodomeo” which means to build like an edifice. The NET Bible makes it much clearer: The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up,………. (1 Corinthians 14:4). Apostle Jude continues to emphasize the power of prayer in building the believer:
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Jude 1:20 KJV
As you pray in the Spirit, you are built up like an edifice. And when you are built up spiritually, you will be able to do mighty things in the kingdom. There are things that you cannot do spiritually if you are not built, no matter how strong your desire is. This is the blessedness of prayer.
One of the things you must learn as a believer in Christ is tarry long in prayer, praying in tongues. Long hours of praying in tongues will build you quickly in the spirit. Where God wants to take us to, if we are not properly built up, we cannot get there. There are spiritual journeys that can only be attained through long hours of prayer.
