THE CURSE FROM THE MOUNT OF BLESSING (GERIZIM)

Judges 9:7 ¶ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

This is a very interesting scenario. As at this time Abimelech, son of Gideon, of a concubine from Shechem has just murdered the seventy sons of Gideon except Jotham the youngest who escaped. Jotham heard that the men of Shechem had gone to make Abimelech king over Shechem for Abimelech had convinced the men of Shechem that since he was their flesh and bones, it was better they made him king instead of Gideon’s sons. On hearing about the coronation of Abimelech, Jotham went and stood on Mount Gerizim and cursed Abimelech and the men of Shechem.

At the long run, his curse came to pass and Abimelech was killed by a woman as he attempted to take a city.

Judges 9:57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

What baffles me is that Mount Gerizm was the mountain Moses assigned from where blessings are to be proclaimed upon Israel while the curse ought to be proclaimed from Mount Ebal (Deuteronomy 11:29). A mountain that was supposed to produce blessings is now producing curses and death. This is serious! This is the revelation: the very things that God has designed to bring us blessings, if mishandled can bring us curses, even under grace where Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Misappropriation of the things of God can bring curses upon us.

Typical examples are men of God. God has set in the church His servants to be a blessing to us. The office of the minister is a sacred one that ought to be treated with a lot of godly reverence. God has anointed His ministers to bring blessings to us. The way we handle them will determine whether we partake of the blessing or the curse. If we believe in their ministry we will prosper; but if we despise them and speak evil of them, we are activating the curse on us.

Your Pastor is not an object to be judged but to be admired. Love him. Pray for him. Give financially to him. The pastoral ministry is for your advantage. Hence hold your Pastor in high esteem and you will prosper effortlessly.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; 13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.
