Psalms 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
There are teachings that denies the death and resurrection of Jesus. These folks believe Jesus came on earth but did not really die and rose from the dead. They believe as He hung on the cross, he disappeared and went to heaven. While there are the Gnostics who believe Jesus did not come in the flesh at all. All of these teachings are dangerous to the Christian faith. Neither has any basis in scripture; where they belong is the trash can and not your mind.
The scripture stands out as the only source of true information and revelation concerning the finished work of Christ. And the four gospels serve as the most accurate and authentic source of the account of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus. To say that Jesus did not come to earth and die is dangerous; it is denying all the prophecies and rituals of the Old Testament.
Our opening scripture gives us a vivid picture of the suffering of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God hence God Himself. He is the creator of the world and the fullness thereof. Now here was the one who created the world, hanging on the cross, crying for thirst. And instead of water, they gave Him vinegar which is sour wine; and it tastes bitter. The one who created water could not get access to water. This is serious.
Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Jesus was both man and God hence He felt every pain that was inflicted upon His body. He suffered both emotional and physical pain. In the garden of Gethsemane, He became so traumatised that blood oozed out of His sweat pores. At the scourging post, His back was lashed with whips till it became like a field that has been ploughed. Finally, they nailed Him to the cross where He hanged several hours writhing in pain, before commanding His own death.
The irony of the whole story is that He did this not for Himself but for you. He took your place of condemnation and death. Now to reject this great sacrifice is to commit the greatest sin of all time. If you are not born again, ask Jesus to come into your heart now. For the believer, the more you meditate on this, the more you should assure your heart of your salvation that was purchased for you. And to say that when a believer sins he will go to hell is to deny the power of the cross. His suffering is your suffering. His death is your death. Praise God!
