1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
There is such a thing as praying with your understanding i.e. praying in a known language. And there is also such a thing as praying in an unknown language ie praying in the spirit which no one understands it except God; it is the Spirit’s prayer; actually it is the Holy Ghost praying together with your spirt, expressed through your mouth.
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. ESV
Faith is not of the senses; faith is of the spirit; and when you speak in tongues your mind is not involved in the process. Hence speaking in tongues is an act of faith. You do not understand what you are saying when you speak in other tongues. Your language and communication is from your spirit; it is the Spirit’s work in you. The scripture says, when you speak in tongues, your mind is unfruitful; that implies that your mind does not get what your spirit is saying.
