FASTING INCREASES YOUR SPIRITUAL SENSITIVITY

Acts 13:2‭ As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

Your spiritual sensitivity is vital in your walk with God. In science, the power of an instrument is known by the level of its sensitivity. The more sensitive an instrument is, the better the results and effective it is.

Your spiritual sensitivity is something that you can increase from time to time. We all don’t operate at the same level of spiritual sensitivity. We have varying degrees of spiritual sensitivity. It all depends on how well you have developed your spiritual sensitivity.

Sensitivity is the ability to pick up signals or stimulus. Your ability to pick up spiritual information and signals from heaven is your spiritual sensitivity. If you are not that spiritual sensitive to the things of the Spirit, chances are, you will miss a lot of vital things that the Holy Ghost would want to do in your life.

BUILD YOUR PRAYER MUSCLES

Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

There is such a thing as “prayer muscles”. Physically, in order to build a strong body, you have to develop your muscles by exercise and training. No one goes into the gym and began lifting higher weights. One has to begin with what he can lift at the time, and with constant practice, he keeps adding to the weight. This is how the great body builders have done over the years.

Recently I read a little about John Cena the wrestler. When he was in school, he was weak hence he got bullied by the bullies. In order to stand against these bullies, at age 12 he decided to start weightlifting. By age 25 he was a professional wrestler. He is one of the few wrestlers who have won the heavy weight championship more than anyone else. He is the highest paid wrestler in the world today. It all started when he decided to build his muscles.

It is not different spiritually. Folks who refuse to develop their prayer muscles will have the devil bully them. There is such thing as spiritual bullying. The devil preys on weak folks. He does not prey on strong believers in Christ. To stay strong spiritually, you must of necessity build your prayer muscles.

THE FUTILITY OF TRUSTING IN SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Luke 18:18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

This grace encounter is really remarkable. It is a story that is side by side with Zacchaeus’ in Luke 19. It shows the weakness of trusting in one’s righteousness. This rich young ruler was a hypocrite. He pretended to be something he was not. This is the state of those who trust in themselves and not in God for their righteousness.

He asked Jesus “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” His emphasis was on doing instead of trusting in Jesus. Jesus knew what was in this man’s heart. He commanded him to obey the commandments. This was his reply: And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up (Luke 18:21). What an answer! This guy claimed he has kept all the Ten Commandments since his youth up.

I love Mark’s account of this story. Jesus looked at him and loved him and gave him the bomb: One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Now look at the attitude of this fellow who was ready to obey every commandment of God. Mark 10:22 says, “And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” This fellow who claimed he has kept all of God’s commandments couldn’t keep just one. He went away grieved and sorrowful. He was not ready to lay it all down before Jesus.

SERVING GOD RIGHTLY

Exodus 23:25 And ye shall serve the Lord your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

There is a right way to serve God. You cannot serve God the way you want to serve Him – God has His own way of doing things. I love what Pastor Chris said: Let’s do God’s things God’s ways. This is so simple but profound!

We are to serve God with joy and gladness of heart. Deuteronomy 28:47-48 says, “Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.”

Under the Old Covenant, God promised a curse on those who did not serve Him with joyfulnees and gladness of heart. This is serious! Even though in the New Testament Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law, we are still to serve God with joy and gladness of heart, if our service is going to be pleasing to God and receive a reward. When we give to God, let us do it cheerfully for God loves a cheerful giver.

DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD

Psalms 37:4 Enjoy the LORD , and he will give what your heart asks. CEB

I love the CEB translation for the opening scripture. It says, enjoy the Lord, and He will give what your heart asks. The kingdom life is about enjoying life in Christ. God does not want us to delight in the things of the world; rather He wants us to delight ourselves in the Lord. It implies that God wants you to delight in prayer; delight in the word of God; delight in going to church; delight in evangelism and touching lives; delight in cheerful and generous giving.

Mary so delighted in sitting at the feet of Jesus; and the Lord Jesus commended her for choosing that virtue.

Luke 10:41-42 The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.” MSG
