2 Simple Things To Do With The Word
- MEDITATE ON GOD’S WORD
Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
This scripture look so simple but profound. The keys to a life of prosperity look so simple that it eludes a lot of folks. Someone may ask: you mean if I just meditate on the word I will prosper? Yes! I thought I need a creative idea? This is a by-product of meditation on God’s word. Or I thought I need a Prophet to pray for me? Well, the answer is right there – it is either you receive it or reject it. The word "Meditate" in the scripture above is a very rich word. It is from the Hebrew word “hagah” which means to mutter, ponder, chew, roar and study. It speaks of rumination.
Ruminants like sheep have complex stomachs with about four chambers. They eat a lot of grass during the day; and at certain times of the day, they sit somewhere quietly and bring out the grass they’ve eaten and chew them again in order to digest them properly and extract the juice. It is by no mistake the Holy Ghost chose the word sheep to describe God’s people. This is what we are supposed to do to God’s word.
It’s not enough to hear, listen or read the word; you have to take that portion that speaks to you and meditate on it. Meditation on God’s word births insight and revelation. It also drives the word deep down into your spirit to settle there. Psalms 1:2-3 says “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
The word “hagah” is made up of three interesting Hebrew alphabets: two of them are grace while the other is a camel. It is arranged in this manner: grace-camel-grace. The camel’s major function is transportation. Thus hagah means grace transporting grace – it implies that God gives you grace to meditate and that transports you to another level of grace. As you meditate on God’s word, more grace is added to you. This is an imperfect action – it connotes that the grace flows as long as meditation on the word continues. God is a generous God. Hallelujah!
In Genesis 26:1, we were told Isaac lived in Gerar. In the Hebrew Gerar means a land of rumination ie a lodging place of meditation. Meditation was part of Isaac’s life. Genesis 24:63 says ”And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide…”. One commentator said that this was the practice of ancient men in Bible days. This was the secret of Isaac’s success. I believe it was during one of those meditation sessions that God spoke to him not to go down to Egypt (Genesis 26:2). That word positioned him for a life of greatness till the Philistines envied him.
The most successful people in the kingdom are those who engage in frequent meditation on God’s word. We are not talking about the kind of meditation practiced in Eastern cultures and by most religious groups. We are talking about meditation on God’s infallible word. Meditation made Joshua a great leader. He won all his battles except one; and in his days, Israel served the LORD.
- STAY OUR MIND ON THE WORD
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
The word perfect is from the same Hebrew word (Shalom) from which the word peace was translated. It means wholeness, prosperity, and completeness. Thus as you stay your mind on the word, God keeps you in peace peace i.e prosperity heaped on prosperity.
Staying your mind on the word means staying your mind on what God has said and not on the news and all the junk of the world and the opinions of men. We live in a world where the pollution that can be brought right into your living room via the media is alarming. Almost all the news making rounds in the world are all negative and full of unbelief.
Turn your attention away from how bad the economy of your country is and the financial downturn around the world. Jesus said when you see these things beginning to happen, lift up your head for your redemption draws near (Luke 21:28). Our economy in the kingdom of God is a stable one.
One of the reasons why the devil bombards you with all manner of problems is to take your eyes off the word. Anything that takes your mind off God’s word is an enemy of progress and must be destroyed. As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on the water; but the moment he lost focus on the Master, he began to sink. Stay focused. Let the word dominate your thinking; for as a man thinketh in His heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7)
