THE HELMET OF SALVATION

Author: Victor Akpovwerha

1 Samuel 17:4-5 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. And he had an helmet of brass upon his head…..

It is important you know your adversary very well – his nature, character and weapons. It will give us the edge. The meaning of Goliath means “stripped, exile”. These are two important words. This was coined from ancient times as men went to war. The General who has been defeated is "stripped" by the other and "exiled" from his native land.

You can notice that when Goliath was taunting Israel, all of them felt stripped and exiled – they ran into hiding and were greatly dismayed. It’s sad that the voice of Goliath is still being noised in the church.

Any preaching that makes you feel stripped and exiled from God’s righteousness and grace is a Goliath voice – it must be silenced. Goliath is from Gath in Philistine. Gath means “winepress” which speaks of the fierceness of the wrath of God (Revelation 19:15). While Philistine is from the Hebrew word “Pahlash” which means “to wallow or roll in the dust”.

This gives us a picture of the devil who uses wrath and condemnation mindset to torment God’s people – a mentality of wallowing in the dust (a sign of disaster or sadness). Remember satan’s food is dust – don’t feed him; starve him to death. When you see people in the church rolling on the floor and crying for their sins just remember this picture.

Goliath was also putting on a helmet of brass. Helmet speaks of a mindset. Brass in the Bible speaks of God’s judgment. In the New Testament, we are instructed to put on the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17) i.e. silver – silver speaks of redemption. Any mentality that condemns you is a Goliath mentality (message of condemnation); drop it. You need to be conscious of the fact that you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

You have to put on the helmet of salvation – God will not do that for you – it is your responsibility. There is no condemnation for you in Christ even if you sin, because Jesus became your brass serpent on the cross and drew all of God’s judgment to Himself. Put on the silver (righteousness, prosperity and abundance) mentality instead of brass (judgment) mentality.

I am appalled at a lot of preachers who are helping satan accomplish his task by giving God’s people a picture of an angry God judging them. Some even say, if you don’t give your tithe, God will take it on the doctor bill or burn your barley field or curse you. Such folks have not really studied the New Testament.

Don’t accept any teaching that makes you feel guilty, condemned, inferior and unworthy. This kind of teaching sucks all the life and strength out of you. Jesus’ blood paid for your entire life of sins. Today, even if you sin, what you have is an advocate who speaks for you. Hallelujah!

1 John 2:1-2

[1]My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

[2]And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

I stand on the grounds of the finished work of Christ and proclaim to you that there is no condemnation for you because you are in Christ. Don’t let Goliath tell you different. Carry in you the consciousness of God’s love and how much you have been forgiven of all sins.
