THE RAIN AND THE WORD

Luke 8:8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

The word is likened to a seed. Luke 8:11 says, Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

But for the word of God to work for you, it is going to take the rain of the Spirit. The word without the rain of God will result in dryness and struggles. It is not the word only; neither is it the rain only; but it is the combination of the word and the rain of the Spirit that brings fruitfulness in the life of the child of God.

Isaiah 32:15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

According to this scripture, if your life is like a desert it will become like a fruitful field when the Spirit is poured upon you. And if it is already a fruitful field, it will become like a forest. The Spirit brings increase into our lives. When the Holy Ghost came on the Day of Pentecost, there was unimaginable increase of the church; in one day, 3000 souls were added to the church. The force behind the increase in the early church was the rain of the Spirit.

The church continued in the power of the Spirit till a great company of Jewish priests, who were deep in Judaism, became obedient to the faith. Acts 6:7 says, “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.”

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Years ago, God spoke to me and said, “I have anointed you to instruct the body of Christ.” Ever since, I have stood in the office of the teacher, teaching God’s word. I recognized the teaching grace early enough in my life and ministry. And by this anointing, many have been blessed by this grace gift.

I remember while teaching a class as a member of a church – long before I became a pastor, a pastor who happened to be sitting in my class after the Bible class walked up to me and said, the teaching grace is upon you. I smiled and just accepted what that pastor said. And true to it, it has been like that. That dear pastor sensed an anointing while I was teaching.

Mark 4:24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear........

Somewhere in the year 2001, persecution broke out on Christ Embassy and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome in Nigeria. The news media carried all sort of unpleasant news about this great man of God. Sadly, the whole thing was spearheaded by some notable church leaders; and he was greatly lambasted. Nearly every news paper at the time carried the news item as their headline.

As at that time, I was following the ministry of Pastor Chris. The more I read those negative news in the papers, the more I became hesitant towards this man of God. And it nearly polluted my heart toward this great ministry. I have to really work on myself and wash my mind of all the filth and the poison that I have heard.

1 Samuel 9:6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.

This was a time when Saul’s father’s donkeys were missing and Saul and his servant went out to look for them. After much search but to no avail, Saul told the servant that they should return home. Interestingly, in that city, Zuph, where they got to was Samuel the Seer. The servant instructed Saul that they go see him peradventure he can show them the way.

If you take a careful look at the description the servant gave concerning Samuel you will see something beautiful about Jesus. He said “he is an honourable man (Life), everything he says comes to pass (Truth) and he will show us the way (Way). You see a picture of Jesus being the Way, Truth and the Life. Hence, in this context, Samuel is a type of Christ and Saul’s slave a type of the Law pointing Saul to Samuel.
